Snakebite Management in Bharatpur Hospital, Chitwan, Nepal
Snakebite is a major but neglected public health problem in southeastern Nepal (Sharma et al.2004). Pandey 2005 could not provide the accurate records of mortality and morbidity in venomous snakebite in relation to types of snake, time taken to arrive hospital, practice of treating before arrival in the hospital as the study was purely the field based. Sparse studies have been conducted so far as to know the snakebite management in Nepalese hospital which complicate the public health problem. Hence, this study will have an invaluable endeavor to draw attention to some of the aspects of snakebite management at Bharatpur hospital.

I am institutional member of Parasitological Research and Socio-environmental Development, Nepal (PARSED, Nepal. I have been teaching Medical Zoology for Bachelor Level students in Science faculty in Birendra Multiple Campus, Tribhuvan University, Chitwan. In 2005, I have accomplished a research work entitled on" Epidemiology of Snakebite in Chitwan and Nawalparasi districts, Nepal" under the financial support of University Grant Commission, Nepal. That study was purely field based. This paper has been in press for its publication in Journal of American Toxicology.
Hereby, I would like to request you to provide me mini research grant so that I could compare my field based work and add the facts which could not be documented in previous research.

6/10/06 Request received by ANMF/Nepal 8/14/06 Projects Committee approved the proposed project 8/24/06 $400 transferred to ANMF Nepal 2/11/07 Memorandum of understanding signed between ANMF Nepal and Parasitological Research and Socio-Environmental Development.
6/4/07 Under peer review by Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC), Ministry of Health and Education 7/4/07 Dr. Pandey reports: The topic approved by ANMF has been amended to "Variation of ASVS vials with respect to first Aid, duration of bite and means of transport", as per the suggestion of ethical clearance board of NHRC. So, I have been collecting data to meet up the objective of amended research topic that is quite specific. We collected data on April onwards while the proposal has been under consideration by ethical clearance board of NHRC because of seasonal case of snakebite problems. It was done as per the suggestion of officer of NHRC - (Sharma sir). However, we have studied 14 envenomed cases till today. Interestingly, the highest ASV consumption is 94 ASVS vials and minimum is 28 vials. We will analyse the data partially while the case number exceeds 25. 7/16/07 NHRC has exempted the fees to only Rs.1000. $400 transferred from ANMF/Nepal to snakebite project.
8/20/07 Progress report submitted to ANMF. 21 snakebite victims studied to date. 9/20/07 Presentation made to Venom Week 2007 Conference. 11/17/07 Final report, to be presented at 14 December 2007 the 6th Asia Pacific Association for Medical Toxicology conference in Bangkok, submitted to ANMF. 39 victims studied. 11/27/07 Project completed. 12/4/07 Final report will not be able to be presented at Bangkok conference for lack of travel funds.
