Membership in the America Nepal Medical Foundation is open to all without regard to gender, race, religion, ethnicity, nationality or institutional affiliation. All project proposals must be approved first by ANMF/Nepal (please see their criteria for the selection of projects). Allocation of resources provided by ANMF will be done in an open, fair and equitable manner. Discrimination based upon economic status will be aimed at assisting the economically disadvantaged.

ANMF is dedicated to building Nepal's medical infrastructure and developing the country's ability to be self-sustaining in the instruction and training of medical professionals. The Foundation's first priority is education and the transfer of technical know-how to Nepal, including continuing medical education programs, library materials, medical technology maintenance skills, etc. ANMF is open to any proposal that promises to strengthen Nepal's ability to deliver quality medical care to its citizens.

ANMF will concentrate on projects that have a "multiplier" effect. Treating Nepali patients is good. Training Nepali physicians to treat Nepali patients is better. Enabling Nepali instructors to train Nepali physicians to treat Nepali patients is best. The Foundation's goal is to remove Nepal's reliance on other countries to train and equip its medical professionals. As a rule, ANMF does not fund travel expenses for individuals traveling from America to Nepal or for individuals in Nepal to attend conferences or other short term educational opportunities.

ANMF will address shorter term goals, but more as an exception than a rule. Emergency requests for medications and procedures are better left to relief and other charitable organizations. Rather than simply conducting a clinic in a remote area, ANMF prefers to use the clinic as an opportunity to train Nepali doctors in new techniques.

Individually, projects should:

  • promote Nepal's ability to be self-sustaining in medical training and instruction
  • promote Nepal's ability to deliver up-to-date quality medical care
  • be undertaken by those with adequate training, resources and institutional support required to ensure success

Collectively, projects should:

  • improve medical conditions for as wide an audience within Nepal as possible
  • promote access to quality medical care for those most in need and least able to obtain it
  • provide balanced support for all specialty areas of medicine in Nepal

Relatively, projects should:

  • favor those that deliver the greatest value for the least investment

Projects that ANMF has funded in the past include continuing medical education programs, clinics, and training stipends. ANMF has provided funds, material and personnel for training and services.

ANMF has limited resources and may not be able to support all the proposals it receives, no matter how worthy. However, in the case that worthwhile projects go unfunded, ANMF will publicize these proposals among the medical community in North America and try to find others who might be able to sponsor them.

ANMF will accept proposals from all individuals and institutions in Nepal and fund those that best fit the criteria listed above. While individuals may apply, ANMF will make grants only to bona fide non-profit institutions (schools, hospitals, clinics, etc.). ANMF, at this time, does not make grants to individuals. Those persons looking for individual support (grants, stipends, scholarships, etc.) must arrange to receive their funding through some supporting non-profit institution. Priority is given to educational institutions.

It is possible that, where a single institution, such as Tribhuvan University or Patan Hospital, fulfills the criteria listed above, ANMF may focus on one or two institutions to receive repeated funding; but not to the exclusion of all other institutions and proposals. ANMF may give such institutions more or less support from year to year depending upon the quality of competing proposals from other institutions. In accordance with our long term goal of Nepal's becoming relatively self-reliant in health care education and technology, ANMF will invest its resources where it can expect the best results.
