Annual business meeting of the Board and Executive Committee (held during annual convention of ANMF) June 9-10, 2001; Hyatt Regency, Rochester, New York

Minutes

1. The meeting was called to order by Dr. Gaury Adhikari.

2. Announcements:

  • The meeting was informed about Tara Niraula’s email wishing to step out from executive committee and remain as a general member
  • Julia Shepardson was congratulated for receiving Dalai Lama Foundation’s international award

3. Project Proposal:

  • The Project Committee of ANMF has come up with a comprehensive plan and guidelines for the ANMF funding for projects in Nepal. The project proposal was adopted by ANMF executive committee in a teleconference call. This combined meeting also endorsed the proposal as the official document of ANMF.
  • Members of ANMF Nepal board present in the meeting, Arjun Karki and Sharad Onta, were requested to make more active and coordinated effort to implement project proposal.
  • Dr Arjun Karki is also going to look into the custom clearance issues in Nepal.
  • It was also proposed that ANMF may need to hire a person to coordinate the ANMF activities in Nepal.
  • Target Dates: ANMF Nepal to review and adopt the proposal, call and accept applications and forward to ANMF in N America by 1st of September, 2001. Funding will be made available by the end of 2001 for the year 2002.
  • Amount: ANMF treasurer Dr Kristin Stueber informed that ANMF can set forth $18000.00 for project funding. The meeting agreed upon making fund available for a project or projects up to above amount but final decision will be made by executive committee based on the type and need of the project.
  • The meeting also agreed to fund only a non-profit organization and giving priority to educational institutions.

4. Receiving targeted Donations:

ANMF has received requests from Dr Richard Katzman (ANMF member) and Dr John Randell (Harvard Medical School) regarding receiving targeted donations to Nepal and Nepali institutions. ANMF will act as a conduit to receive such donations in USA. After discussion in the meeting, following plans were made-

  • ANMF may receive such donations, but executive committee will make decision for each request.
  • Approval from ANMF Nepal will be sought for such donations.
  • This will result in added bookkeeping burden for ANMF. Julia volunteered to take it for now. Professional help from accountant will be needed.
  • Project committee will elaborate the Project Proposal on the issue of targeted donation.

5. Dr Coleman’s Foundation:

Dr Arjun Karki informed ANMF about Dr Coleman’s Foundation’s interest to donate $20000 for cancer therapy in Nepal. Dr Blair will contact Dr Coleman and get more information.

6. Future CME plans:

2001- Cardiology and Pulmonary CME, Dr S Braman, Brown University

2002- Infectious Disease, Dr J Allen, Dr D Blair and J Koirala

2003- Gastroenterology, Dr R Shrestha

When asked for providing contact persons to SIMON for CME coordination, Arjun expressed his willingness to continue to act as coordinator for ANMF’s CME programs in Nepal.

On Sunil’s query about ER CME in Nepal for this year, suggestions were made to contact General Practitioner’s (G.P.) Society in Nepal and NMA.

7. Medisend and ANMF collaboration:

Janak informed meeting about the Medisend, a nonprofit organization based in Texas, who has invited ANMF to open dialogues for collaboration. Medisend collects various healthcare items from around the hospitals in Texas and other parts of USA and ships them to needy parts of the world. The meeting agreed to start dialogues but also advised that someone should look at the kind of products they collect. Suggestions were made to look into other similar organizations, such as one based in Greater Boston area.

8. Financial restructuring:

With the expected increase in ANMF’s financial activities, ANMF will need more help in bookkeeping and may also need periodical consultation from a professional. Meeting agreed to seek for such help as needed. It also agreed to start tax filing beginning this tax year.

To make it more convenient and to decrease the risk of losing checks in mail, a second ANMF bank account will be opened in California where all the official ANMF mails are received. The main account will be maintained in Boston by the treasurer.

9. ANMF Membership:

  • Membership Committee of ANMF formed: Dr Sohan Khatiwada (coordinator), Dr Govinda Lohani, Dr Bhargab Dixit and Bina Gurung
  • Board members will be contacted and asked to renew their membership, preferably life membership. Some of the board members who have been completely out of touch with ANMF in past will also be asked about their desire to continue to be in the ANMF Board.

10. Elections:

11. ANMF’s Sixth Annual Convention (2002)-

L.A. Orthopedic Hospital, Los Angeles, CA - to be hosted by Libby Wilson, MD Dates: June 14-16, 2002 (3rd weekend of June) Lodging: Radisson Hotel

Proposed site for 2003 Meeting - Ann Arbor, Michigan- to be hosted by Dr Gaury Adhikary

12. Miscellaneous:

  • KUMS will be asked to submit specific project proposals from outside agencies, which ANMF will forward to various donors. Grant preparation will be funded by ANMF, if outside professional help needed.
  • ANMF is still willing to help NMA (Nepal Medical Association) and HealthNet Nepal’s plan to expand their server to 11 places outside Kathmandu in order to provide access to Medline and other medical literature from different parts of Nepal. ANMF has not received a formal proposal and will contact NMA to find out about its current position.

13. Closing remarks and conference overviews were given by Dr Libby Wilson, who called this meeting very informative and stated that ANMF has taken a giant step towards starting projects in Nepal.

14. The meeting was adjourned at 10:30am on Sunday.
