Rupa Hamal was born in Kathmandu, Nepal. She graduated with a Bachelors of Dental Surgery from India and worked in Kathmandu for several years before moving to the USA in 1993. Her academic background includes a Doctor of Dental Medicine (University of Pennsylvania), Certificate in Periodontics and Masters in Public Health (The Ohio State University), and Masters in Oral Biology (University of Alabama at Birmingham). She has also held teaching positions at the University of Pennsylvania and The Ohio State University. She served as director of Advanced standing program at University of Pennsylvania.

She received several awards while at University of Pennsylvania including the Pass-International Dentist award (academic and clinical excellence award) and a nomination to Omicron Kappa Upsilon (Honor Dental Society). She was also nominated for Who’s Who in American Universities in 1996 and a Fellowship award while at University of Alabama.

Dr. Hamal has been active in community service. She has helped different non-profit organizations to open dental facilities in Nepal. She was the first dentist to volunteer at the dental facility in Namche Bazaar. She was also instrumental in establishing a dental facility supported by the Lion’s Club in Kathmandu. She has served as President of Nepali American Organization of Ohio.

She lives in Gahanna, Ohio with her husband Robert Schmidt and son Rohan. Currently she is a Periodontist in private practice in Ohio. She also serves as a dental consultant to the Ohio Tobacco Quit Line.
