Project Description

Background

Kirtipur is geographically located at latitude (27.67 degrees) 27° 40' 12" North of the Equator and longitude (85.28 degrees) 85° 16' 48" East of the Prime Meridian on the Map of the world. The locations related to Kirtipur (Bagmati) are represented by the path the bullet takes from the muzzle of the gun to the target and may not be nearest by road.

In the history of Nepal the small Newar town of Kirtipur is unique. Even though the founding of the town dates back to the 12th century and the time of King Shivadev its true origin is probably far older as discoveries that date back to the Pre-Lichchavi epoch indicate that it could be one of the oldest settlements in the entire Kathmandu Valley. In the course of time, and particularly under the reign of the Malla Kings, Kirtipur developed into a small independent town with several beautiful temples and sanctuaries.

Kirtipur Municipality is deprived of adequate health care facilities. There is one Kirtipur Hospital recently started by Kathmandu Model Hospital and one government health post delivering basic health care services to the people of Kirtipur. These all facilities are not easily access by all communities of Kirtipur and neighbors' VDC of Ilaka Number 10 of Kathmandu District. In internally, Kirtipur Municipality and neighbors' Village Development Committees are not well access by road. Most of communities are far from roads facilities. So the Primary Eye Care Service Center's service is requiring in all communities of Kirtipur. The Primary Eye Care Service Center can provide basic and primary care service to the patients at timely to save the eye sight. It will advocate and educate to the community people on prevention side.

The Center play an important role in serving the poorest segments of the population in the most rural and semi urban people and underserved areas of Ilaka Number 10 (more than 12 Village Development Committee and 1 Kirtipur Municipality), Kathmandu District. This is where blindness hits communities the hardest. Most Eye Hospitals in Nepal are located in the Center of District and most of the remote village could not access the proper eye service. it means people don’t get hospital services. The best way to reach such population is by community based primary eye care service (outreach programs). These areas are those locations where establishing an Eye hospital is not feasible.

Vision 2020 is a global initiative which aims to help eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020, jointly launched by the World Health Organization and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) together with more than 20 international non-governmental organizations involved in eye care and prevention and management of blindness.

There are no eye care facilities made available to this section of population from government or public sector, except for the very occasional eye screening camps conducted by some NGOs. Keeping in mind the number of operable cataract blinds attending the camps in the past years. Lions Eye Care Centre organized four eye screening camps in Kirtipur Municipality in B.S.2064 Ashad and 777 patients examined and found 83 patients are operable cataract and cataract surgeries performed 61. From this figure, it seems that over 10% of the eye patients coming to eye camps are cases of operable cataract requiring sight restoring surgery.

Lions Club of Kathmandu Kirtipur is committed to the national plan of action for eye care services and implementation of Vision 2020 concept of elimination of avoidable blindness. To fulfill the Vision 2020 concept, Lions Club of Kathmandu Kirtipur has decided to run a community based and ownership program, called Primary Eye Care Service Center in Kirtipur.
