Cardiac Electrophysiology Training Fellowship
Sponsorship for cardiac electrophysiology fellowship training at National University Hospital and Heart Institute, Singapore.
There is a need for a properly well trained cardiac electrophysiologist for Nepal so that the indigent people of Nepal would benefit. As daily we get 250 to 300 cardiac patients in the out patient and emergency department of Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre. Significant number of them constitute patients with cardiac rhythm disorders which warrants cardiac electrophysiologic services.

Nepal, a poor landlocked country in South Asia, is currently emerging from political turmoil. It has a large number of cardiac patients majority of whom are very poor. It is reflected by the number of patients attending our Out Patient Department and Emergency of Shahid Gangalal National Heart Centre (SGNHC) and totals to 250 to 300 per day.
We also have significant number of patients with heart rhythm disorders which includes either slow heart beats (that warrants pacemakers) and fast irregular heart beats (arrhythmias which requires medication or a special mode of therapy called radiofrequency ablation). Radiofrequency ablation is a part of Cardiac electrophysiology and is the definitive treatment for cardiac arrhythmias. Till few years back the Nepalese patient with such disorder had to go abroad, mainly India for that procedure. This caused financial as well as psychological burden in the indigent Nepalese patients. Seeing the magnitude of the problem SGNHC procured an electrophysiological lab (sophisticated equipment necessary). We now thus require a cardiologist who is adequately and properly trained in the field of cardiac electrophysiology. Here I would like to add that we have sufficient manpower in the other field of interventional cardiology that is in Angioplasties and Balloon valvotomies.
We have selected National University Hospital in Singapore and also a cardiologist from our centre. The hospital in Singapore has stated that they will provide one year fellowship course in the field of Cardiac electrophysiology for the year 2008 - 2009 but the entire funding (accommodation, transportation, etc.) should be taken care by SGNHC.
