The Tribhuvan University Institute of Medicine was established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University and had the mandate and the responsibility of training all categories of health manpower needed in the country.

The Institute plays a major role in developing undergraduate and postgraduate level of human resources for health, undertakes scientific research in the field of health sciences, provides curative, rehabilitative, promotional and preventive health care service and provides training to certificate level health personnels.

The Teaching Hospital was established in 1983 with the primary objective of providing practical field for the postgraduate, undergraduate and certificate level of training programme conducted by TU Institute of Medicine which also assists the Institute of Medicine in producing and fulfilling the manpower needs of the Kingdom. It has a 401 bed hospital.
